The Feathers, Westminster, London
Just a short stroll from the Yard, the Feathers pub, with its gothic facade, reminded Jake of the TARDIS – small and dingy-looking on the outside, bright and airy on the inside.
Despite being the closest pub to the Yard, very few in the job drank there, and early in the week, the place was rarely busy. Jake hated to admit that he knew their opening hours off by heart – and exactly when peak trading fell.
He needed a drink. Something was bothering him, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was. He felt overloaded by all the material floating around in his head. The random jumble of information weighed down upon his shoulders, tormenting him. None of it seemed to fit together, though it felt as if it should.
‘Pint of Stella please,’ Jake called over to the barman, who was wiping the far end of the polished wood bar.
‘No worries, mate,’ he called back in an Australian accent.
There was a TV on the wall. On the news they were talking about next year’s US presidential election. The Democrats had announced their candidates. There was a black guy among them that Jake had never heard of before – Barack Obama – talking into the camera. He seemed really polished and composed. Hillary Clinton was also among the candidates and the favourite to win. There was currently a dispute between them about who would and wouldn’t be willing to meet with the leaders of Syria, Iran and Venezuela during their first year in office.
It always went with family dynasties, mused Jake – Bush followed by Clinton, followed by another Bush – presumably now followed by another Clinton. Different political parties, but always a continuum of the same main players in the background. How could these family dynasties continue to dominate the presidency otherwise? Jake concluded that the black guy, Obama, didn’t stand a chance. He couldn’t imagine America would ever elect a non-white president. They’d surely go for the white candidate, even if that candidate was female.
The barman plonked Jake’s pint in front of him.
‘That’ll be £2.60 please, mate.’
Jake dug in his pocket for the cash without turning his gaze from the screen.
Families. It wasn’t so unusual that there were dynasties in politics, he supposed. He saw it in criminal networks with organised crime families, and even in terrorism. He began wondering about Jenny and her mother. Did Jenny play a role in her mother’s criminal network? It was highly likely.
Jake picked up his pint, but before he even took a sip, it hit him.
The uneasiness that he felt; the thing that was troubling him.
Claire.
If her uncle Frank were involved in criminality, there was a chance that Claire might be involved too. Things ran in families. Crime ran in families. Why had she really bugged her uncle? Was she telling the truth?
He thought about her attitude toward him on the phone as he’d told her about the SFO meeting, and about Jenny. He
